Can helicopter murder help the elephants?

Nine Tanzanians are arrested for involvement in the shooting down of a helicopter where the pilot Roger Gower was killed. Four of them was found guilty of illegal possession of firearms and sentenced to 15-20 years in prison. The assassination is dealt with in a separate trial later this year.

The resurrection of the murder has been great both nationally and internationally. New figures from the Ministry of Tourism show that tourism grew in 2014 by 8.5%. Increased poaching and shooting down helicopters therefore are unwelcome contributions to the image of Tanzania as a country which keeps the preservation of natural areas high. Strong measures will therefore be taken.

Signals that the local population must be encouraged to counteract these tendencies and report if irregularities are underway might possibly improve the chances for a successful fight against poaching.
